There’s currently a storm brewing in the UK, due to the government’s latest drive to get people off the welfare state and into employment… sounds reasonable, yes.

But when you consider this current program (called WorkFare) is forcing the poorest people to take unpaid positions in large profit making corporations in return for their pittance of state support.

If jobseekers don’t take these positions ALL SUPPORT is removed, which increases the risk of homelessness, and entrenches poverty into the system.

When you couple this with the fact that they are actively seeking ways to do away with the minimum wage, the EU working hours directive, human rights legislation, as well as any legal assistance through Legal Aid (especially regarding debt assistance, employment and housing issues).

This is surely compromising the human rights of those unemployed people, at a time when there simply aren’t enough jobs. This WorkFare program does little to provide jobs, it actually provides less incentive for those companies to provide jobs as they are provided with a constant stream of unemployed people as fodder.

I have created this graphic to demonstrate that it’s the largest of companies which will benefit from this scheme, not the jobseekers…
